Causes of Eating Disorders in Children

There has been much discussion lately on the roll of parents causing eating disorders in their children, this is the case or not? This is a very sensitive topic because it is painful for the family to think that they are the cause of the daughter / son they bulimia and / or anorexia.
Causes of Eating Disorders in Children

I am a medical doctor and suffering from anorexia and bulimia for 15 years. Also I have been involved in the treatment of hundreds of people with eating disorders. Personally, I do not know the family who want to encourage eating disorders in their children. I would say that parents and families do not directly cause eating disorders.

However, I know firsthand that the atmosphere of family, parenting style and mental and emotional problems that are undiagnosed in the elderly contributes substantially to the development of eating disorders in their children.

There are a lot of research around the coil a genetic predisposition to eating disorders. Yes, eating disorders have a genetic component as well, but only a vulnerability to develop eating disorders rather than the disease itself that people can inherit.

People can also inherit certain personality traits that make them vulnerable to developing eating disorders: such as perfectionism, anxiety and depression tendencies, competitiveness, impulsive and stubborn to the extreme. All this can make people vulnerable to developing eating disorders.

This is the environment that alter the vulnerability of people in this disease. The way people live their lives from birth they are able to make a genetic susceptibility to disease.

People first and most important environment have is their family. Often people with eating disorders described how in their childhood they have a family environment where parents are very tense and tight control. Children in such families do not have much room to experiment and to be free. This type of parents do not let their children find their own path in life, turning them into dolls who are forced to become a follower and controlled by strict rules.

In such families children turn to eating disorders as a way to control their lives the best that possibly can and to find emotional escape in space their eating disorder.

Another type of family is one overprotective. Protective behaviors to children so they put a lot of limitations that children tend to seek his / her freedom and escape in things like eating, non-eating and manipulate their own body weight. The parents could not let their children differently from their mental image of what they are or how they think children should be. They see the children's achievement only in terms of their own desires and opinions.

Most of the parents in these types of families still want only the best for their children and not even realize that what they do is bad for children. Many parents have their own emotional issues to deal with, which is still unresolved and is rooted in their own childhood. Some parents may even have a diagnosed mental disorder such as OCD or personality disorder. Because these disorders have not been diagnosed parents are not aware of them and continue to give great pressure on their children and other family members.

Many doctors and therapists assume that blame the parents for their children's disorder is not a good idea, because parents may feel guilt and shame for their own way. Feelings of guilt and shame can stop parents from helping children to recover and maybe even the parents refused to participate in the child's recovery program.

Nevertheless, it is evident now that the family atmosphere remains the same if the non-loving, demanding, limited and one overprotective, children have little opportunity to get better.

The purpose of writing this article is to not put a lot of blame to parents, but only to warn families eating disorder sufferers that certain changes be made in a family if the family wants to help their loved one recovers.
