However, some people are so involved and focused on their food so that it becomes an obsession. Orthorexia often begins with a desire to overcome chronic illness or to improve general health so that people start to watch what they eat. Unlike anorexics who want to lose weight only; othorexics have different motives for their behavior. People with orthorexia trying to become pure, healthy and return to what they call nature. Such motivation is creating a lot of confusion about their diagnosis among health workers. Many doctors diagnose anorexia in patients who actually have orthorexia.

The orthorexia term coined by a doctor from Colorado Steven Bratman MD. What does it mean? The Greek word "ortho" means "correct or right" and "orexis" meaning "taste". There are elements of obsessive-compulsiveness in orthorexia and people who have an obsessive personality develop orthorexia much easier than people who do not have this property.

Statistics on orthorexia shows that it is far more common than anorexia and bulimia even. More people describe only the properties in question orthorexic research, rather than anorexia or bulimia, these people may already have the disease is fully developed.

What are the criteria for someone who may have orthorexia?

    - Exaggerated concerns about healthy eating - avoid social activities because they can be linked to unhealthy eating - Feeling isolated from people because of the problem of "food" - Visit a health food shops every day for a reason to find "healthy" products

Diet can be a great tool to fix some health problems but when taken to extreme dieting can turn into an obsession that can completely distort the rationality of a person when it comes to food.

Before people start a diet they need to understand both sides of their actions: negative and positive side of the diet. Mechanisms to develop an obsession should also be considered. When someone knows how their brain works and how it is possible to get addicted to things, especially if you're prone to obsessive behavior. Knowledge of what can happen to them should be brought into their diet plans in the beginning, do not wait until too late to change their eating habits.
