Studies Eating Disorders - What Has Been Found so far?

Researching eating disorders is a relatively new field of medicine. Scientists still do not have much data on long-term recovery process from eating disorders. But many things about who is susceptible to disease, how it started and how to develop mind and that is what we will see here.

According to recent figures there are very many people who meet the criteria for eating regularly - about 10% -15% of women. This includes all eating disorders: anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and others. The most dangerous of all anorexia nervosa takes about 1% -1.5%. Bulimia nervosa takes about 5% -6% and the rest for binge eating, extreme dieting, obsession with body image, etc.

More than half of women who have anorexia will develop bulimia in the disease process. And nearly 80% of bulimic behavior also showed anorexia. To say in other words they swing between the non-eating compulsive overeating and clean at all times during the disease.

And the only dividing line between anorexia and bulimia is their weight. People with very low body weight are considered anorexic. And those with normal weight or slightly overweight is considered bulimia.

Recent studies have also found that women are much more susceptible to disease then men. Genetic predisposition to developing an eating disorder is also confirmed by many studies.

It is said that people inherit a specific gene that is responsible for developing addictive (obsessive) behavior.

It also suggests that people with certain personality traits are also more susceptible to eating disorders. These personality traits include perfectionism, avoidance of hazards and impulsive (or difficulties in impulse control).

The drive for thinness is widely influenced by the media. When women with certain personality traits and genetic make up constantly exposed to images waif-like models, slim actresses and stunning beauty icons they would want to be like them.

When all the above factors come together in one person, he / she can develop an eating disorder.

To conclude, eating disorders are multi-factor disorders. It takes a particular genetic makeup, the influence of specific social and personality to develop the disease.

This complexity makes it very difficult disease to treat and manage. However, there are many cases of recovery from eating disorders and generally the disease is considered treatable.
